Police investigating fatal rollover crash on south side

First responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio police are investigating a fatal rollover crash that happened on the south side of town early Monday.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Moursund Boulevard near East Ashley Road around 6 a.m. for reports of a deadly crash.

A sergeant at the scene says the driver of an SUV was speeding southbound on Moursund Blvd. when they lost control, hit the sidewalk and went down into an embankment.

Their SUV went across the other side of the embankment and hit a utility pole and then caught on fire.

Bystanders tried to rescue the driver but the fire was too hot to reach him safely.

First responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene. Officials say they can’t identify the driver’s gender because the body had severe burns, but they believe it’s a man.

The medical examiner is at the scene.

Officials say the road will remain closed to traffic until around 9:30 a.m. to possibly 10 a.m. while they investigate.

This is a developing story.
