According to police, search efforts have been going on for 36 hours.
SHERMAN, Texas — Crews are currently searching for a missing 8-year-old girl who was involved in a crash near Highway 75 on Christmas Eve in Sherman, Texas.
According to a Facebook post from the Sherman Police Department, officers and Sherman Fire-Rescue responded to a crash scene near Highway 75 around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Police said a vehicle left the highway near Taylor Street, got trapped in a drainage ditch and traveled down Post Oak Creek towards Houston Street. Police said four of the occupants were rescued, but recovery efforts for more still trapped were ongoing.
According to two updates on the Facebook post, local agencies and State Search and Rescue teams arrived to assist in the search after 9 p.m. Tuesday.
On Wednesday morning, Sherman PD provided another update at 7:31 a.m. saying a new shift of searchers continued efforts as they were still looking for a missing person from the car, who was later identified as an 8-year-old girl.
“Crews including Texas Task Force 2 searched throughout most of the night to try and locate the missing 8 year old girl, to no avail,” Sherman PD said Wednesday in a 10 a.m. update. “The search was resumed before sunrise this morning, with members expanding the search area outside of Sherman and into the lower branches of Post Oak and Choctaw creeks.”
In the latest update, which came at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sherman PD said searchers covered about seven miles of creek, but were unable to locate the girl. The search teams’ focus is shifting into the county to target possible locations where they have not looked yet, police said.
On Wednesday afternoon, Sherman PD made a separate Facebook post thanking the community for its support during the search.
“In crises like these, we are blessed to serve a community that so badly wants to help in any way they can.”
