CANYON LAKE, Texas — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week’s Forgotten Friend is a friendly 4 1/2-year-old named Kongo, who was surrendered to a shelter in Selma and then pulled by the Canyon Lake Animal Shelter Society (CLASS) six months ago when they noticed his potential. He appears to be a Mountain Cur mixed with Labrador, carrying the perfect blend of intelligence, strength, and charm.

Kongo weighs about 66 pounds, with a gorgeous Brindle coat and soulful amber eyes, making him both handsome and loveable.

“Kongo had an owner that allowed him to roam the streets,” said CLASS staff. “He was picked up by animal control a few times and reclaimed, and the last time he was picked up, the owner never came back to reclaim.”

Kongo gets along great with other dogs, of all sizes and breeds. In fact, he’d love to have a doggy friend in his new home, one that can handle him being a rough player at times. But cats are a hard pass, as well as small critters, like rabbits and birds.

He’d love to have an active family choose him to bring home. He’s very polite and doesn’t jump on people. His balance of spunky fun and relaxed companionship makes him an easy fit for many families.

“He would love to join in on walks, hikes, and adventures, but he’s just as happy to have a yard to run and play in,” said CLASS. “He’s not overly active and doesn’t require tons of exercise. He’s has done well with kids, polite and happy to play with them.”

He enjoys getting pets, getting brushed and loves treats, but can be a little picky, refusing to eat chicken feet or beef lung treats. But really, who can blame him?

“Bath time is easy, and brushing is a treat he happily soaks in,” said CLASS. “In his kennel he is calm, easygoing, and perfectly content to relax until it is time for company.”

Kongo is already potty-trained and knows his commands like sit, paw, and lay down. He can pull a bit when’s on a leash, but takes well to corrections.

“Playing tug with toys is always a hit with him, and sometimes he gets so happy, that he zooms around the yard with the toy and wants you to chase him,” said CLASS.

Kongo is healthy, current on his vaccinations and has already been neutered.

“Kongo is a very sweet and loving guy that has just the right amount of energy and silliness while also enjoying lounging around,” said CLASS.

Kongo had a rough start to life, but through it all has kept his gentle and forgiving spirit, and is still full of love.

“He is waiting for a family who will see how special he is, celebrate his tender heart, and finally give him the forever home he has always deserved,” aid CLASS.
