SAN ANTONIO — Two powerful films made in the Lone Star State will be featured at the CineFestival in San Antonio this summer.
The 46th annual CineFestival will be held on July 9-13 in San Antonio highlighting Chicanx, Latinx, and International Latin American cinema. Venues for the festival include the Carver Community Cultural Center on Hackberry Street and the Santikos Mayan Palace on SW Military Drive. Tickets go on sale June 23.
Organizers said this year’s festival will specifically focus on local and regional filmmakers. Dozens of new feature films, the Mesquite Award nominees for Best Texas Short Film and a variety of Latinx short films from San Antonio will also be presented during the CineFestival.
“Since CineFestival made it a priority to support local and regional filmmaking through its program in 2017, many films related to Texas and San Antonio have enlightened our screens, and this year is no exception; we are fortunate to be in the midst of a uniquely relevant time for Latinx filmmaking in Texas and the borderlands” CineFestival Director Eugenio del Bosque said.
The focal points of the nation’s longest running Latinx film festival, will be two Texas films: “Uvalde Mom,” and “Take It Away.”
“Uvalde Mom,” is a feature length film that uncovers the story of Angeli Rose Gomez – a single mother who ran into Robb Elementary School to save her sons during the mass shooting. The director, Anayansi Prado, is scheduled to attend the festival.

Co-directors Adrian Alejandro Arredondo and Myrna Perez will close out the festival with their feature documentary “Take It Away.” The film highlights the life of Johnny Canales who impacted famous musicians like Selena, Ramon Ayala and several other Tejano artists with his award-winning television show – The Johnny Canales Show.
“We are proud to showcase the best talent, history and culture of Texas Latinos,” Cristina Ballí, Executive Director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center said. “It is no coincidence that we are honoring the announcement of TAKE IT AWAY about Tejano legend Johnny Canales on the anniversary of this great icon’s passing.”

Organizers are expected to announce full event details and a complete festival lineup as the event nears.
