BEXAR COUNTY, Texas — Two Bexar County sheriff’s deputies were shot during a domestic disturbance call early Sunday morning in north Bexar County, authorities confirmed.
It happened just after 8:30 a.m. in the 700 block of Tecumseh Drive, near East Borgfeld Road in north Bexar County.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to the scene for a reported domestic disturbance involving a man who was estranged from his family.
“This started as a domestic disturbance,” said Sheriff Javier Salazar. “The female resident was able to get out of the home with her two young children and call 911 after the suspect forced entry.”
Investigators say a woman who lives at the home with her two children, both under the age of 10, fled the house with the kids after the man forced his way inside. She was able to call 911.
When deputies arrived, the suspect was inside the home. As deputies attempted to make contact, the man produced a weapon and began firing, striking both deputies.
“Both deputies were hit—one in the hip and one in the hand. Fortunately, both injuries were through and through and both deputies are expected to recover,” said Sheriff Salazar.
Salazar said the deputies returned fire, killing the suspect.
The two deputies were taken to University Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition. One deputy has more than 10 years of service with the sheriff’s office, while the other has been with the department for about two years.
The suspect, a 38-year-old man, has not yet been identified.
Sheriff’s officials say there is no danger to the community. The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office will continue gathering evidence as investigators process the scene.
“We’re asking neighbors to please be patient as we continue to process the scene and gather evidence,” said Sheriff Salazar.
KENS 5 spoke with a neighbor, who did not want to be identified. She says she knew the family and was shocked to find out what had happened, calling the 38 year-old suspect a good person.
“We were crying for him and everything when we found out that he passed away. We were not expecting that,” she said.
The neighbor says she has talked with the woman, who is also a victim in the incident and says the victim is distraught about what happened. The neighbor says she will be keeping the family and the deputies in her prayers.
“I’m gonna be praying for them to get healed… God’s gonna be with them but he’s still gonna be with my friend and he’s gonna rest in peace too,” she said.
