AUSTIN, Texas — After a politically tumultuous week in the U.S., President Joe Biden will soon make his way to the Texas capital.
The trip was previously planned for July 15 but was postponed following an assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump just two days prior.
On Tuesday, the White House announced Biden’s plans to visit Austin on July 29, where he will commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the LBJ Presidential Library.
The announcement comes after Biden formally announced his decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race.
“It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President,” Biden shared in a statement. “And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
As Biden canceled his reelection campaign, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to seek the bid. In just one day, Harris’ team raised more than $81 million total from supporters, surpassing previous records.
Now, the president prepares to give a keynote speech at the LBJ Presidential Library, located at the University of Texas at Austin’s campus. The speech will take place inside the auditorium at 2313 Red River St.
Drivers should expect various traffic delays, particularly on Red River Street, Robert Dedman Drive, Clyde Littlefield Drive, East Dean Keeton Street, Comal Street and Manor Road.
Roadways near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport might also be impacted.
