SAN ANTONIO — The stage is set for both presidential frontrunners to take on the evolving conversation on immigration when they visit the Texas-Mexico border Thursday.
President Joe Biden is expected to arrive in Brownsville in the afternoon, marking his second trip to the border region as president. Biden last visited the border in January 2023, when he went to El Paso.
According to the White House Press Secretary, Biden will meet with border agents to discuss the need for bipartisan legislation.
The White House shared more details on the president’s push to pass a bipartisan border deal. The $20 billion proposal says it will pay for significant policy change and critical resources at the border. This is the same border deal congressional republicans turned down this month.
According to the White House officials, the money would go towards adding more border patrol agents and asylum officers along the Texas-Mexico border. Detention facilities would also get an upgrade going from 40,000 beds to 50,000 beds to address overcrowding.
Funds for additional immigration judges to tackle a major backlog of asylum cases will also be included.
While Biden makes his way to Brownsville, former president and GOP frontrunner Donald Trump will head to Eagle Pass for his own border trip.
Both visits by President Biden and former President Trump, highlight the growing concern over border issues as the 2024 Presidential Election draws closer.
