Presley has been waiting more than four years for a family to call his own | Forgotten Friends

After more than four years of waiting, gentle Presley is still hoping someone will finally choose him. 🐾💔

SAN ANTONIO — Our “Forgotten Friends” series showcases a dog or cat each week that has spent a lengthy time at an area shelter, just waiting for someone to notice them and bring them home to love.

This week, we meet Presley, an 8-year-old Basset Hound mix with droopy ears, gentle eyes, and a heart that has been waiting far too long.

He arrived at the Animal Defense League in 2021 after being surrendered by his previous owner. Since then, he’s watched hundreds of dogs walk out the front doors with their new families… while he stayed behind.

Day after day. Year after year.

Still, Presley waits.

Shelter staff say he’s “slow and steady,” the kind of dog who doesn’t rush into love, but holds onto it tightly once he feels safe. He walks politely on a leash, listens carefully, and leans in for affection from the people he trusts. Treats help too.

“Believe it or not, he’s a lot smaller than you look,” staff shared. “But what he lacks in size, he makes up for in heart.”

Presley loves quiet car rides, sticking his nose out the window, letting the world pass by. He loves slow walks, new smells, and the simple comfort of being near someone kind.

He would do best in a calm, adult home or with older children, where life is gentle and predictable. He doesn’t need special medical care, just patience, understanding, and someone willing to let him love them in his own time.

“He’s a very good boy,” staff say softly. “And he would make a wonderful lifelong companion.”

Right now, Presley’s adoption fee is waived as part of the Animal Defense League’s PAWS-itive Beginnings Adoption Special, running through January 25. It honors long-stay pets like Presley, dogs who have done nothing wrong, except wait.

For more than four years, his bed has been in a shelter.

For more than four years, he’s hoped every new face might be the one.

And he’s still hoping.

To meet Presley, visit any Animal Defense League campus in person during open hours to complete the adoption process.

After years of waiting, Presley is still hoping his person will walk through the door.

Maybe this is finally his moment to go home.
