SAN ANTONIO — Friday night San Antonio is dedicating the Pride Cultural Heritage District.
It’s in the Tobin Hill neighborhood, off North Main between Ashby and Euclid, commonly referred to as “The Gay Strip.”
This process has been going on for a long time. The community has been working toward a Pride Cultural District since 2011.
Friday night is the official dedication ceremony, and the official kickoff for Pride Week.
The area has long been known as “The Gay Strip” because of the number of LGBTQ+ owned, operated or affiliated businesses. The city says the neighborhood has been a refuge — a place where members of the community can unapologetically be themselves.
The Pride Bigger Than Texas Parade has been hosted annually in the neighborhood since 1982.
Shortly after the designation was approved, James Poindexter with Pride San Antonio spoke about the journey to this recognition.
“I had tears running down my face, because it has been a long time coming,” Poindexter said. “And our theme this year for Pride is ‘Unity in the Community.’ This is a culmination of something coming into fruition — of everything we’ve been fighting for.”
This new district is the fifth Cultural Heritage District recognized by the City of San Antonio.
The ceremony kicks off at 6 p.m. at the rainbow crosswalk at North Main and Evergreen. It will feature speeches and performances that reflect the San Antonio Pride community’s past, present and future.
