Property tax bills are out and the clock is ticking to file your protest

If you’d like to pay a smaller tax bill, there’s a free workshop Monday evening that will teach you how to make your best case.

SAN ANTONIO — Property tax bills are out and the season to protest your valuation is upon us. If you’d like to pay a smaller tax bill, help is at hand.

There’s a free workshop downtown Monday evening where they will teach you how to make your best case.

KENS 5s Sue Calberg says she make her case every time she sees a significant jump in value and she’s been able to do it because she says she has attended these free workshops.

The free sessions teach you about exemptions you may qualify for and they walk you through the steps you have to take to appeal your valuation.

They’re sponsored by the city’s Neighborhood and Housing Services folks and they are friendly and can answer any question you may have.

As a matter of fact, you can get one on one help with your particular issues. You can even fill out the necessary forms and actually file a protest on the spot.

They’ve been having these workshops over the last several weeks and so far more than 200 people have filed and they helped 30 more people get the exemptions they are entitled to – like over 65 or for veterans..

The workshop Monday night is at First Baptist Church in the heart of downtown at 515 McCullough. It starts at 6:00 p.m.

And if you can’t make that one, there’s another one Wednesday, same time 6:00 p.m. on the south east side.

That one’s at Compass Rose Legacy school at 3300 Sidney Brooks.

The best part, you try it, your bill might go down. It doesn’t cost a thing to try and you might be able to keep more money in your pocket.
