Protestors gather outside Christian private school as Governor Abbott promotes vouchers in San Antonio visit

Gov. Greg Abbott promoted school vouchers at the San Antonio Christian School on Monday.

SAN ANTONIO — As the topic of school vouchers has intensified at the Capitol Governor Abbott stopped in San Antonio on Monday.

Abbott promoted vouchers at the San Antonio Christian School while dozens protesting the bill from San Antonio all the way to Comal County rallied against school choice outside.

The message to San Antonio Christian families was to get this bill passed in the house and signed come June to promote choice for parents, but those apposing were not allowed on property and said if this bill is passed it would be a detriment to the public school system in the area.

“We work very hard as well as my husband to send my kids here and this would be an amazing blessing financially,” Jessica Snipes, a mom and alum at San Antonio Christian School said.

She has hope where others are losing it.

“Vouchers will cover about 10% of expenses for our son so it won’t even cover one month and so we’re already left with the rest of the bill,” a protestor told KENS 5.

Other protestors said the vouchers would take money from public schools, adding that many schools don’t even have enough money for teachers.

Senate bill 2 now passed in the state senate will move on to the house where Abbott tonight says he is confident it will pass and come June the bill will be signed into law.
