The Humane Society is looking to reunite the lost pup with its owner.
HOUSTON — A puppy was washed into a storm drain and became stuck. Now the Humane Society is looking to reunite the dog with its owner, or find it a good home.
A couple walking in Pearland heard the terrier mix’s cries on Wednesday, Christmas Day. They alerted the Pearland Fire Department. They saw the puppy, but later lost sight of the animal. They returned the next day and successfully freed the pup. It had minor injuries.
The puppy was treated and taken in by the Houston Humane Society, who had a veterinarian available that day.
The dog does not have a microchip. Dogs that are not microchipped must be held for 72 hours to allow the family to come forward. The person hoping to reclaim the dog will need proper documentation. The dog is held at the shelter at 14700 Almeda Road, just south of the Sam Houston Tollway.
If the puppy is not claimed by its owners, it will be put up for adoption next week.
Pearland Fire Lieutenant Andrew Haire said storm drains can be dangerous for rescues.
“The Pearland Fire Department strives to provide great services to all of Pearland, including our animal friends,” Haire said in an emailed news release. “We’re grateful for the positive outcome in this case and appreciate the collaborative efforts across our city that help make a difference every day.”
The Humane Society asked pet owners to microchip their animal family members ahead of New Year’s Eve fireworks. Houston Humane Society offers microchipping services and is open seven days a week.
