Q&A: Artist brings that San Antonio Spurs mural magic to Austin

For Spurs Week in Austin, artist Joe Hermosa brings vibrant Spurs murals to the Texas capital.

SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs once again took over Austin, TX, for Spurs Week, a week-long celebration of the Silver and Black.

From community outreach and pop-up shops to a pair of games at the Moody Center, Austin is covered in all things Spurs, including a cherished San Antonio tradition: Team murals.

Throughout San Antonio, you can find Spurs murals featuring current players, the Coyote, icons such as Tim Duncan, and the team’s retro-Fiesta colors slashed across buildings.

And during this year’s Spurs Austin Week, an artist brought that mural magic to the capital of Texas.

Joe Hermosa, an artist from Austin, picked up his paintbrush, paint cans, and the tools of the trade to bring a new Spurs mural to life in Austin.

He created two murals (on the building of the Spurs’ official wine company, Wanderlust Co., featuring the Coyote in action, the San Antonio skyline, and plenty of the Spurs’ retro Fiesta colors for that added touch. He also created the Spurs murals for Spurs Week Austin in 2025.

In this Q&A, Hermosa tells us what went on behind the scenes of the murals, his inspiration, his favorite Spurs player, and so much more.

Jeff: Joe, what inspired these Spurs murals?

Joe: The inspiration came from the collaboration between the Spurs and (Spurs jersey patch sponsor) Ledger. Ledger and Spurs are amazing. They come here every year.

I’m from Austin, so to be from here and have the Spurs here, and to have the opportunity to represent my city and connect with the Spurs is special. I grew up in Austin, and I have a family in San Antonio, so growing up, I would go see Tim Duncan, (Pau) Gasol, (Manu) Ginobili, and everyone else. It feels like a full-circle moment.

This collaboration was intended to bring the power of the two major organizations to the city, and it was a great blessing to accomplish this.

Jeff: I noticed that the Coyote is heavily represented in the murals. Why did you pick him?

Joe: I’ve always loved the Coyote, and personally, I love the Fiesta colors. When I started the Spurs portion and integrated those colors, it only made sense to include that strong mascot in the Ledger portion rather than just match it. To kind of bring energy from that, because he brings so much energy and really turns up the crowd every time.

So, to have that represented on the wall for everybody to kind of feel it, I just thought it’d be cool.

Jeff: Did the Spurs approach you to do this? How did it work out?

Joe: I have a good partnership with Wanderlust Wine Company, my good friend, Sammy Lamb, and everyone there. So they do this series, and we’ve been blessed enough to have murals for the promotional aspect.

It just all really works out well. I’ve had a good rapport with them. Last year, we did a great mural. So it made sense this year, and then we were able to bring Ledger in on the whole thing. So it was good to go back-to-back.

Jeff: Who is your favorite Spurs player?

Joe: I love Wemby (Victor Wembanyama). I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been watching Wemby since he was over in France as a young guy. And then he went number over here!

It’s been interesting being a Spurs fan my whole life and then getting such a generational talent. From there, the sky’s the limit for all the other players we’ve acquired, as we build a real team that is selfless toward each other, the organization, growth, and, obviously, championship aspirations.

Jeff: Any chance that we might see more Spurs murals pop up in Austin? Maybe a Wembanyama mural in Austin?

Joe: Of course! We have plenty of murals coming up, and collaborations with other sports teams and similar projects are also planned.

So I have many great blessings and opportunities that I hope to take advantage of. Yeah, we will get a Wemby mural soon. I would love to if there’s an opportunity.

Jeff: What’s your vision of a Wembanyama mural in Austin?

Joe: I love the wingspan thing. So I might do something with the extension! Kind of play around with something like that, whether that be maybe physically or just like our aspirations and how far we’ve come in such a seemingly short amount of time.

Jeff: It must be an honor to create this Spurs mural just in time for Spurs Week in Austin.

Joe: It’s a great blessing to have the opportunity to work with such an organization and to put my best foot forward in that aspect.
