‘Quite disturbing’ | Shertz police continue search for a man accused of attempting to abduct a child

Schertz police search for a man suspected of attempting to kidnap a child outside a local restaurant.

SCHERTZ, Texas — A man is accused of attempting to abduct a child in Shertz on Monday.

Schertz Police took to Facebook on Tuesday, warning everyone of the suspect they continue to look for. They said around 8:45 p.m. Monday, the department received a report about a suspicious individual at SAT Asian Seafood, located at 950 FM 78.

The reporting party told police that while they were in the parking lot, an unknown Hispanic male dressed entirely in black opened their vehicle door and reached for their child.

Police said the reporting party immediately intervened, as they were alarmed and concerned for the welfare and safety of their child. Once the suspect was deterred, police said the reporting party left the location and called 9-1-1 upon returning home.

Staff who confronted the man said he seemed out of it and didn’t seem to understand them.

Security footage shows a man dressed in all black in the parking lot of SAT Asian Seafood off 950 FM 78 in Schertz.

Police said that the man opened a car door, reached for a child inside, when someone stepped in and called 9-1-1.

After the altercation, a manager says the people involved called the restaurant to warn them and call the police.

“A guy walking around doing inappropriate things, disgusting things around the building, it’s quite disturbing,” Assistant manager Gary Cabrera said.

Workers who came out to help noticed the man urinating outside. They said he seemed belligerent.

“A person that was out of sorts, I guess maybe under the influence.”

Once they were made aware, security footage shows workers continuing to try and get the man out of the parking lot.

After a while, he left for another lot across the street, then just before the police showed, he left walking down Pecan Grove.

“It’s shocking for the area and community…disturbing and unfortunate…and concerning.”

Cabrera and his colleagues see their place as a safe space to invite the community and eat.

“Business as usual – we’re going to keep a closer eye – we will come outside more often…we get busy – we have to remember there’s a whole world outside we have to maintain.”

Schertz PD is working to find this suspect and will work with the district attorney to determine the charges.

They say the man could be homeless, but if you have any information, you are asked to call the police.
