Being outdoors isn’t always about doing something exciting. Sometimes the thing to do is nothing!
FREDERICKSBURG, Texas — Most times on Texas Outdoors we’re involved in some kind of high energy, high intensity activity. This week we decided to relax, kick out feet up and enjoy a nice bottle of Texas wine…outdoors! There is probably no better place to do that than in the Texas Hill/Wine country.
Texas is home to more than 60 wineries around the Fredericksburg to Austin area. Some have unbelievable wines. I would put a few varieties up against any wine, anywhere.
This day we stopped at Kuhlman Estates. It is owned by the Heath family, which, they tell us was one of the first wine operations in Texas.
Kuhlman is about to wrap up a complete renovation of it’s premises. It now boats a new, very modern tasting room, an expansive outdoor seating area and a Bistro.
“We’re going to see some Asian infusion in it, we’re also going to see some just classic like just steak and cheese melts, or a ham and cheddar melts. We’re going to keep it really simple on those fronts and do very traditional bistro style,” says manager Richard Foster.
The offerings will pair well with every variety of wine Kuhlman produces. In fact, the menu was chosen to compliment the wines they produce.
The grounds are beautiful too! Row after row of grape vines surround the new renovations, creating an excellent atmosphere to hang out in the shade, under gently turning paddle fans and enjoy the literal fruits of the vineyards labor.
There are numerous wineries along this stretch of highway 290, affectionately know as the Texas Hill Country Wine Highway.
So on those days when there’s nothing in season to hunt, and it’s too hot to fish…or maybe you just want to get outside for a different reason, you can’t go wrong with a stop along this stretch of road.
