Rare Harvest supermoon in October kicks off celestial spectacle

The 2025 Harvest Moon is coming at last. It’s a bit late this year, as it typically occurs in September. However, it will be bigger and brighter than usual due to the 2025 Harvest Moon also being a supermoon, according to EarthSky’s Deborah Byrd

According to Farmer’s Almanac, the full moon that appears closest to the first day of fall is referred to as the “Harvest Moon.” In 2025, October’s full moon takes place approximately one day closer to the fall equinox, which happened on September 22, than September’s full moon did. This is why October’s full moon will be called the Full Harvest Moon and September was known as the Full Corn Moon.

Here’s what to know about the Harvest Moon.

The Harvest Moon for this year occurs on October 6, 2025. It will appear full for 3 days, including the prior night of October 5 and the following night of October 7, according to Farmer’s Almanac. With it being a supermoon, the proximity makes the moon appear larger and, by a noticeable amount, brighter than a typical full moon, according to EarthSky’s Deborah Byrd.

Yes — in 2025, the Harvest Moon will happen in October (in Texas and everywhere in the Northern Hemisphere), according to Space

You can see it at its peak at 10:48 p.m. that night in San Antonio.

The name Full Harvest Moon symbolizes the peak timing for fall harvesting of cultivated crops, nuts and late fruits, according to the Farmer’s Almanac. The harvested food is to be properly stored before winter, and October is an ideal time to preserve and protect the goods, the Farmer’s Almanac noted. The Apache of the Southern Plains call October’s full moon the “Moon When Corn Is Taken In.” However, the Creek tribe of the Southeast uses the name “Big Chestnut Moon” to indicate the harvest season for nuts.

Yes, it will. It’ll be the first of a series of supermoons in 2025, according to Earth Sky.

There are three supermoons in 2025 and they will happen consecutively, starting with the October Harvest Moon. The other two supermoons will rise on November 5, 2025 with the full Beaver Moon, and December 4, 2025 with the fill Cold Moon, according to EarthSky.

A supermoon occurs when a full moon coincides with the moon’s closest approach to Earth in its elliptical orbit, a point known as perigee, according to NASA. Supermoons only happen three to four times a year, and always appear consecutively, NASA added.
