SAN ANTONIO — Readers can delve into a literary haven of various genres from fantasy, biographies, poetry and more – all representing the LGBTQIA+ community.
The San Antonio Public Library is celebrating Pride Month by hosting an array of events and providing recommendations for “queer literature” in their collections.
The Libby app, available in Bexar County and surrounding areas, offers a list of “Pride Reads” where readers can check out various novels in different formats from physical copies to audiobooks.
The list includes fan-favorites like Alice Oseman’s “Heartstopper ” series – now a beloved Netflix TV series, Casey McQuiston’s “Red, White & Royal Blue” – an Amazon original film. There’s also several other books by TJ Klune, Andre Aciman and even Elliot Page’s memoir “Pageboy. A full list of the books can be found here.
The SAPL staff also curated their own recommendations featuring transgender and non-binary characters in the hopes of showcasing the diverse literary selection at SAPL.
Some of the novels featured in the list include Virginia Woolf’s “Orlando,” Griffin Hansbury’s “Some Strange Music Draws Me In,” and “Bellies” by Nicola Dinan. The list consist of over 20 books written in various years from 1956 to 2024.
And if readers are looking for haiku’s and free verses, the SAPL staff also created a “Poets for Pride Month” list. Nearly 20 books were added to the list – each expressing feelings and ideas related to queerness. Guests who browse the list will find poems by Sappho, Frank O’Hara, John Ashberry and many other talented writers.
But according to SAPL, queerness is no stranger to literary history therefore the staff created a list of classis novels – they consider landmarks in queer literature.
Some of the infamous books on the list include “The Picture of Dorian Gray,” “Tipping the Velvet,” and “The Color Purple.” The staff recommends this list for those curious about the literary lineage.
