WACO, Texas — A dog that had been missing since Hurricane Harvey was reunited with its family this week after it was found in a public bathroom at Waco’s Cameron Park.
The dog, named Blue, was taken to the Pet Circle Regional Animal Center and scanned for a microchip, which was registered to a family in Corpus Christi.
Blue had been missing since 2017, when Hurricane Harvey damaged the family’s fence and the dog escaped. It’s been a long, harrowing journey for the family, who was overcome with emotion upon being reunited, according to a post on the City of Waco’s Facebook page. Blue was two years old when the hurricane separated her from home, according to the City.
The Facebook post serves as a reminder of the importance of microchipping pets. The city requires pet dogs and cats to be microchipped Residents can also take stray animals to any city fire station to be scanned for a microchip for free through the Fire House to Your House program.
The city also encourages pet owners to take advantage of local low-cost microchipping providers, like the Animal Birth Control Clinic, which offers pet microchipping services for $25.
