“I want justice served. I want everybody that is responsible to be held accountable.”
DILLEY, Texas — We are learning more about a man who was murdered early Saturday morning Dilley, a Frio County community located about 73 miles southwest of downtown San Antonio.
The killing of 23-year-old Jeremy Benavidez sparked a manhunt. After nearly 30 hours on the run, the suspect was caught at a motel in Dilley.
Now Benavidez’s sister, Sharon Segovia, is calling for justice for everyone involved.
“I dropped to my knees,” Segovia said. “I cried and screamed and punched.”
Segovia recalls the moment she found out her brother was gone.
“This heartache, this pain that my family is going through, is beyond something I have ever felt,” she says. “It wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”
Frio County Sheriff Peter Salinas says that around 2 a.m. Saturday, Dilley police officers and Frio County sheriff’s deputies were called out to the 400 block of Curtis Street in Dilley, where shots had been fired.
Salinas says Benavidez was shot multiple times in the stomach and back. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Before Benavidez died from his injuries, Salinas says he was able to tell authorities he was shot by 49-year-old Rosendo Rodriguez—his cousin. Rodriguez was taken into custody at the motel Sunday morning.
Segovia says Benavidez was threatened for months before the shooting, and believes more people are responsible for his death.
“I want justice served. I want everybody that It’s responsible to to be held accountable.”
Segovia says Jeremy was goofy, smart, talented, sweet, humble and a beautiful soul.
“I want you to remember him with that smile, that light that was taken away,” she said.
Segovia says the family is now in need of donations to give her brother the burial he deserves.
