Selena Quintanilla Perez broke barriers and became known as the Queen of Tejano. Her life was tragically cut short on March 31, 1995.
SAN ANTONIO — She was an iconic performer, musician, and designer with roots across South Texas. Selena Quintanilla Perez broke barriers and became known as the Queen of Tejano in the early to mid 90s.
On the cusp of breaking into the main stream of pop music, her life was tragically cut short when she was murdered by a former friend and confidant.
Her memory still inspires millions of people from around the world, and continues to impact the Tejano music scene. In a new, 45-minute special from KENS 5, anchor Sarah Forgany takes a look back at her remarkable life and career.
The special includes an interview with multiple award-winning Tejano star Shelly Lares. Lares is in the unique position of having grown up performing Tejano music shows from a very young age. She formed a close bond with Selena as the two were rising stars in the music world. They were just 10 years old when they met and they leaned on each other as their fame grew. In her full interview, Lares provided a new perspective on the Queen of Tejano.

Another Tejano star we interviewed for this special was Stefani Montiel. The award-winning musician was also good friends with Selena in the early years of her career. Like Lares, Montiel remembers Selena for the warm, caring, thoughtful person she was. From unexpected gifts in unusual places to stories of life on the road, Montiel shares memories of Selena and reflects on the impact she had on the Tejano music industry.
