Renderings of a new Sichuan-inspired eatery set to take over a historic house at Hemisfair show a complete transformation of the home into a bar and restaurant. The renderings and remodeling plans were submitted in public documents to Historic and Design Review Commission and show plans for an expanded patio and modernized interior while holding on the elements of the 19th century home.
Kusch Faire is a new concept from Kristina Zhao, the mind behind Sichuan House and Dashi Sichuan Kitchen + Bar. It will move into the Kusch Home on the Hemisfair property as part of the park management group’s efforts to revamp the space into a destination food, entertainment and hospitality center.
A statement from Hemisfair says Kusch Faire will feature Zhao’s “popular Sichuan inspired cuisine as well as grab-and-go options for visitors to picnic in the park.”
The renderings from San Antonio-based Candid Works Architecture show an expansion of an exterior behind the house to section off an outdoor patio with tables and chairs. There will also be a separate entrance to Kusch Faire from the patio. A new building will be built on the property to house restrooms and the kitchen. The wall of that new addition will feature tiles inspired by Hemisfair’s Taiwanese Pavilion from the 1968 Worlds Fair.
Site plans show the interior will feature a main dining space, a tea room, a bar area and a room that is labeled as a “bodega.”
Kusch Faire will join other restaurants that moved into Hemisfair including CommonWealth Coffeehouse & Bakery, Dough Pizzeria Napoletana, The Paleteria San Antonio, Box Street Social, and Lick Honest Ice Cream. It will also join Bombay Bicycle Club and Jerk Shack. HDRC is set to vote on the renderings on Wednesday, April 5.
