ESPN’s Shams Charania reports Popovich needed medical attention for a “serious issue” before a recent home game.
SAN ANTONIO — According to a recent report from ESPN’s Shams Charania, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich suffered a health issue before the team’s recent home game versus Minnesota.
He did not take the court against the Clippers and will not be on the sidelines when the Spurs travel to Houston on Wednesday night.
The Spurs have not made any official statement on the situation; however, Charania reported more insight on ESPN’s “NBA Today.”
He reports that it was a “serious issue” that needed “medical attention,” and it is still unknown when the longtime Spurs head coach will be back.
“I was told it was a health issue, and it was a serious health issue that the Spurs health with over the weekend,” he said. “It was a situation on Saturday night pre-game where Gregg Popovich needed medical attention in San Antonio. “
Said Charania: “There is a great level of concern around the situation.”
Assistant coach Mitch Johnson will be the interim head coach indefinitely and spoke about Pop before Monday’s clash versus the Clippers.
“He’s not feeling well. This has happened before. I think everybody’s just always got to be ready for the next man up.” Johnson said pregame versus Minnesota. “Sometimes people get sick or don’t feel well, or things come up in life. He’s just not feeling well.”
Popovich is the NBA’s leader with 1,390 coaching wins and five NBA titles. He is in his 29th season and has won three NBA Coach of the Year awards.
