Report: Spurs named as preferred destination for Kings’ Fox if traded

Spurs-Fox trade rumors pop up once again.

SAN ANTONIO — According to a report via Sacramento’s ESPN 1320’s James Ham, Kings guard De’Aaron Fox would prefer to be traded to the San Antonio Spurs.

“According to multiple sources, if De’Aaron Fox leaves the Kings via trade, his preferred landing spot is the San Antonio Spurs. It could be an interesting couple of days in Sacramento,” he posted on X.

The Spurs-Fox trade rumors popped up again when ESPN’s Shams Charnia reported the Kings are ready to discuss potential deals involving the All-Star guard ahead of the NBA Trade Deadline.

This is not the first time the Spurs and Kings have been linked.

In Dec. 2024, a report via The Athletic claimed that the Kings might be on borrowed time with Fox and have “entered the danger zone” regarding his future with the team.

“While league sources say Fox has not asked for a trade, the former All-Star and his prominent agent are reading the room in Sacramento before deciding what comes next,” reports The Athletic.

The Athletic also reported that the Spurs (among other teams) could emerge as a suitor for Fox should he want to leave Sacramento.

“Meanwhile, rival executives are monitoring the Fox situation closely and league sources say one team in particular — the San Antonio Spurs — is positioning itself to pursue the Houston native as a possible partner for Victor Wembanyama, should Fox become available. Barring a significant Kings turnaround, others are surely close behind.”

Fox recently declined a three-year, $165 million extension from the Kings, and his current contract ends in the summer of 2026.

Pairing Fox (27 years old) with Victor Wembanyama would be an incredible force for the Spurs, and the team can afford to add him to the roster with their financial cap flexibility.

In addition, he could see San Antonio as a chance to return to Texas.

Fox, who played high school basketball in Katy, TX, also grew up a fan of franchise great Manu Ginobili, and his wife is from San Antonio, attending Johnson High School.

“San Antonio is not too far from where I grew up,” said Fox in 2019. “Manu (Ginobili) is great. I grew up in Texas, and the Spurs went to the playoffs every single year since I was born. I definitely saw a lot of Manu, and just the influence that he’s had on not only basketball in Argentina, but America, Texas, San Antonio.”

In addition, in June 2024, Fox invited San Antonio area women’s basketball players to help him at his basketball camps.

He flew two San Antonio high school women’s basketball stars, Leonna Sneed of Wagner High School and Bella Flemings of Brennan High School, to Sacramento to help them gain national exposure at his camp.

The NBA Trade Deadline is just days away, and with the Spurs having a stockpile of draft picks and players to use in a trade, it will be interesting to see if San Antonio does make a move to bring in Fox.

The Kings guard’s current averages are 25.2 points, five rebounds, and 6.2 assists per game.
