SAN ANTONIO — The San Antonio Spurs couldn’t wait until they were on the clock to get started.
On a night when the Spurs hope to make their final lottery pick for the foreseeable future in the first round of the NBA Draft, the team got a head start on transactions by sending their No. 38 overall pick to the Eastern Conference champion Indiana Pacers, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. In return, the Spurs are getting a future second-round pick and cash.
The No. 38 pick amounts to a second-round selection the team may have decided it didn’t need anymore.
KENS 5 Sports Anchor Nate Ryan says the trade – which was reported with less than an hour before the draft was set to start – increases the likelihood that the team plans to keep both its first-round picks on Wednesday night.
The Spurs have the No. 2 and No. 14 picks on the first night of the draft, set to begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday. They’re widely expected to take Rutgers freshman Dylan Harper with their first selection to further shape a young core already featuring Victor Wembanyama, Stephon Castle and De’Aaron Fox.
