Reports: Alex Bregman is signing with Red Sox

The Athletic first reported the deal.

HOUSTON — Former Astros star Alex Bregman has inked a deal, according to reports.

Bregman is joining the Boston Red Sox on a 3-year, $120 million deal, according to Chandler Rome with The Athletic.

The deal includes two opt-outs, according to ESPN’s Jesse Rogers.

Bregman, 30, has spent his entire nine-year MLB career with the Astros and built quite the resume during his tenure in Houston.

  • 2 World Series championships (2017, 2022)

  • 2 All-Star Game selections (2018, 2019)

  • All-Star Game MVP (2018)

  • Silver Slugger in 2019

  • Gold Glove in 2024

In early December, MLB.com reported that Houston offered Bregman a six-year, $156 million deal, which would be the biggest contract in franchise history, surpassing Jose Altuve’s $151 million deal.

Born in Albuquerque, Bregman played his college ball at LSU. He was drafted with the second overall pick in the 2015 draft and debuted the following season.

Bregman’s 2019 season was his best offensive season. He finished as the runner-up to Mike Trout in the MVP race that year. He hit 41 homers and had 112 RBI while leading the league in walks with 119 and WAR with 8.9.

The Houston Astros made a splash this offseason by trading Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs in exchange for three players — Isaac Paredes, Cam Smith and Hayden Wesneski.

The trade gives Houston some flexibility on the infield since Paredes, who primarily plays third base, can play all infield positions, if necessary. The trade also leaves a pretty glaring hole in Tucker’s former position in right field.
