HOUSTON — The Houston Texans went into training camp this season with plenty of wide receivers. Now, they apparently have one fewer.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, the team traded away receiver John Metchie III in a deal with the Philadelphia Eagles. Schefter posted that Houston will get tight end Harris Bryant and a fifth-round pick out of it.
Metchie was a second-round pick in 2022 out of Alabama. He missed his rookie season after a cancer diagnosis the summer after he was drafted. Metchie, who was treated for acute promyelocytic leukemia, was cleared to play in the 2023 season.
For his career, Metchie has 40 catches for 412 yards and a touchdown.
Bryant was a 2020 fourth-round draft pick out of Florida Atlantic. For his career, he has 98 catches for 140 yards and 10 touchdowns. He’s played most of his career with the Cleveland Browns.
As for the Texans and their wide receiver group, Nico Collins has been emerging as one of the top receivers in the league. In the offseason, they added Braxton Berrios from Miami and Christian Kirk from Jacksonville, and drafted Jayden Higgins and Jaylin Noel.
