Resident displaced after apartment fire; Investigators looking into cause

SAN ANTONIO — A fire that broke out in a bottom-floor apartment Friday was quickly contained before it could spread to neighboring units, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

Crews responded to the 2900 block of Rigsby for reports of a fire just before 1 p.m. east of downtown.

Officials said the blaze was discovered by the resident after they returned home and found their apartment filled with smoke. Fire crews arrived within minutes and were able to control the flames shortly after making entry.

No one was inside the unit when the fire started, and no injuries were reported. The apartment where the fire originated suffered extensive damage and is considered uninhabitable. The resident, who lives alone, will be relocated to another unit within the complex. All other apartments remain safe and livable, SAFD said.

Fire investigators are working to determine the official cause. Officials said neighbors reported hearing about a possible fight prior to the fire. Those claims are unconfirmed, and officials have not ruled anything out.

The investigation is ongoing.
