Residents asked to evacuate as fire at industrial building near Tyler airport creates heavy smoke

TYLER, Texas — Officials have asked residents to evacuate as firefighters battle a blaze at an industrial building on State Highway 64 near the entrance to Tyler Pounds Regional Airport Thursday night.

According to a Smith County Facebook post, officials have asked residents to evacuate who live along CR 1147, to FM 724, north to CR 1151.

A shelter at Pleasant Retreat UMC, located at 417 CR 1143, has been opened.

As of 8:39 p.m., spokesperson Nikki Simmons said the fire is contained to the perimeter of the property and that a majority of it has been put out.

Smith County fire personnel were dispatched to the scene at 6:22 p.m.

Fire personnel has confirmed to CBS19 the facilities that are burning are used for plastic grinding and oil production. According to a Facebook post from Smith County, the fire is creating hazardous smoke.

Simmons said fire crews will be at the scene throughout the night.
