Resignations follow after SAISD schools close due to cold classrooms

SAN ANTONIO — Fallout continues over system failures at SAISD which caused the closure of nearly all the school campuses this week.

Parents sent KENS 5 photos of thermostats showing classroom temperatures in the 40s and as a result there have been resignations of administrative staff.

An internal staff email obtained by KENS 5 shows Superintendent Jaime Aquino saying when he took the job made a promise to lead with transparency and he is not making good on that promise.

Aquino called the conditions the district operated under this past week inadequate and said failures were a combination of both human error and faulty equipment and infrastructure leading to severe breakdown in their heating systems.

Aquino says he deeply apologizes expressing gratitude to staff, and their commitment but he says apologies are not enough.

Aquino says he accepted the resignation of Ken Thompson, Deputy Superintendent and Mike Eaton, Chief of Operations, recognizing their significant contributions while acknowledging the current situation stems from various issues including aging infrastructure, system failures and being underfunded by the state.

Aquino promises to identify and address the root causes of the crisis working with an external investigative team to examine the event and publish a full report summarizing the reason for the breakdown.
