The book was checked out in July of 1943 and due 28 days later. The library says it was mailed back to them earlier this summer.
SAN ANTONIO — Have you ever forgot to return a library book and ended up with a big fine?
Someone in Oregon just returned a book to the San Antonio Public Library that was checked out nearly 82 years ago, way back in 1943!
They found the book while sifting through their father’s possessions after he passed away. The family member returned the book with a letter back in June.

“When I noticed it was from the San Antonio Public Library, I decided to send it back to you,” the letter states.
They think that their grandmother checked the book out when their father was 11 years old, right being transferred to work at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico City.
“She must have taken the book with her, and some 82 years later, it ended up in my possession.”
“Your Child, His Family, and Friends” by Frances Bruce Strain was checked out in July 1943 and due back 28 days later.

In their letter, the writer thanks the library for their service and even jokes about the book’s late return. “I hope there is no late fee for it because Grandma won’t be able to pay for it anymore.”
Folks used to rack up heavy fines from having overdue books, but the San Antonio Library stopped charging fines back in 2021.
“SAPL eliminated overdue fines in 2021 to break down financial barriers to accessing library services and resources,” said SAPL.
The book was received in good condition and is now on display for the month of August in the lobby at Central Library.
The library plans to donate “Your Child, His Family, and Friends” by Frances Bruce Strain to the Friends of San Antonio Public Library and sell it in the Book Cellar used book store in the basement at Central Library. The proceeds from the sale will benefit the library.
It just goes to show that it’s never too late to return an overdue book!
