‘Ride VIA to Vote’: Here’s how car-less San Antonians can still get to the polls Saturday

Here’s what you need to know if you need a ride to vote.

SAN ANTONIO — As local county officials continue their push to get out the vote in Saturday’s pivotal election – a task made taller after Bexar County’s worst early voter turnout since 2013 – VIA is working to make sure those without a car can still cast their ballot.

VIA Metropolitan Transit is bringing back its “Ride VIA to Vote” initiative, which gives car-less voters a way to get to polling locations for free. The free lifts are available whether riders use the regular bus service, VIA Link or VIAtrans.

The transportation group says all you have to do to plan your trip to a polling location is use the VIA goMobile+ app, avaialble on Google Play and the Apple App Store. San Antonians who use the VIAtrans paratransit service will schedule their trip the regular way, over the phone or online.

This year’s election is the most pivotal in some time for the Alamo City, with 27 candidates vying for mayor and 10 City Council seats up for grabs, including four open council races. There are also school district ballot propositions, district trustee contests and various other local elections on the ballot depending on where you live.

Those taking advantage of VIA Park & Ride service to get to Saturday’s Fiesta events, however, should note that those buses will only go straight to the Fiesta location and back.

The polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday.
