Riley’s Tavern patrons stay loyal amid arson investigation at historic Texas bar

Despite the incident, Riley’s remains open, and its patrons are determined not to let fear take over.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Comal County Fire Marshal Office wants to find a person they said is on video attempting to set fire to Riley’s Tavern, a historic bar and Texas landmark located between New Braunfels and San Marcos.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of June 20. Surveillance footage shows a person pouring gasoline at the front of the bar before the flames started. However, the small fire went out and caused only minor damage.

Loyal customer Dee Bartlett said it is a blessing it didn’t spread.

“I’m just so thankful that what was intended did not happen,” she said. “We had residents in the bungalows back there, people staying, and neighbors nearby. It could have easily spread.”

Riley’s Tavern has been a mainstay in Hunter, Texas for more than 90 years. It holds the distinction of being the first bar in Texas to receive a beer license after prohibition.

Known for its welcoming atmosphere, Riley’s is a place where, as Bartlett puts it, “you’ve never really met a stranger.”

“It is just a wonderful place to come and relax and meet people,” she said.

Bartlett, who visits the tavern multiple times a week, said the attempted arson has left many regulars on edge.

“It really made me sad,” she said. “Why would you do that?” “

The Comal County Fire Marshal’s Office tells KENS 5 they’re investigating the case right now as arson. Officials are asking for the public’s help identifying the person seen in the surveillance footage.

Despite the incident, Riley’s remains open, and its patrons are determined not to let fear take over.

“We’re going to keep doing what we’re doing,” Bartlett said. “Being kind to one another, loving one another, and playing our games. We’re not going to worry about foolish people.”
