Former Baylor football player Robert Griffin III, joined by Patrick Mahomes, was inducted into the Texas High School football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
WACO, Texas — Copperas Cove alumni and Heisman trophy winner, Robert Griffin III, was inducted into the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
During his time with the Bulldawgs he led Copperas Cove to two 4A state championship appearances in 2006 and 2007. He threw for 3,357 yards and 41 passing touchdowns. Griffin also rushed for 2,161 total yards and 32 rushing touchdowns.
In Griffin’s senior year he broke the Texas state track record in the 110M and 300M hurdles nearly beating the national mark. He was later named the 2006 Gatorade Track and Field Athlete of the Year.
“Texas high school football is everything,” said Griffin. “And when you play at every level you realize the guys that you get to play with that you went to first grade with or kindergarten with all the way through high school not all of them got to live out their NFL dreams. Some of them didn’t even get to live out their college dreams, but that dream in high school, you’ll always hold near and dear to you. And that’s something that can never be replaced.”
Griffin then went on to play football for Baylor where he still holds 20 different records including the career record for passing yards and passing touchdowns. He went on to become the first and only Heisman trophy winner from Baylor cementing his legacy as one of the greats football players to ever where the green and gold.
RGIII was the second overall draft pick in 2012 NFL Draft and was selected by Washington Commanders. He became the youngest starting QB in NFL history.
“It just means more uh in Texas. The greatest high school quarterbacks are from Texas, the greatest college quarterbacks are from Texas, our greatest Heisman Trophy winners are from Texas, and the greatest quarterback in NFL history who’s down there [Patrick Mahomes] will be from Texas.”
He joins the Texas High School Football Hall of Fame next to 3-time Super Bowl Champion Patrick Mahomes.
“There’s so much to the community and there’s so much to the friendships that you build with these guys. The guys that I play high school football with and grew up playing sports with are still my best friends today. They come to my football games and support me just like we support each other growing up and so I think just building that accountability and building those friendships and knowing that football is a tool for me to go out and showcase who I am but it’s not who I am. That comes from high school football and building those friendships and showing how football can be a special place for a community.”
