ROBINSON, Texas — Robinson Independent School District is taking a major step forward in campus security, becoming one of the first districts in the area to implement an AI-powered security system designed to detect everything from weapons to medical emergencies.
With nearly 300 cameras already installed throughout the district and existing metal detectors in place, Robinson ISD is now adding artificial intelligence to their comprehensive safety protocols. The district, which operates two older secondary schools with students frequently moving between buildings, sees this technology as a crucial enhancement to their existing security infrastructure.
The new system, called Volt AI, integrates seamlessly with the district’s existing camera network. Using advanced artificial intelligence algorithms, it can identify potential threats and alert administrators within seconds of detection.
David Wrzesinski, Director of Safe Schools at Robinson ISD, demonstrated the technology’s capabilities directly from his mobile phone, showcasing how the system provides real-time monitoring and instant notifications to school administrators.
“It’s an emerging technology that I’ve kind of had my eye on for quite some time,” said Wrzesinski.
Advanced AI algorithms can identify various types of weapons, providing immediate alerts to security personnel.
Automatic recognition of physical altercations allows for rapid response from staff and administrators. AI can identify abandoned or suspicious objects that might pose security risks. The system can detect when someone has fallen or appears to be in medical distress. Administrators receive notifications within seconds, enabling rapid response to any situation.
“It also can pick up fights, it can pick up when kids are gathering in a large crowd that potentially might be a fight,” said Wrzesinski. “It would alert immediately our administrators and our safety team that we might have a problem. You can find a bag that maybe is left and you know it’s unattended somewhere, it will alert us so it immediately sends an alert to our safety team within seconds.”
According to Wrzesinski, Robinson ISD appears to be pioneering this technology in their region, with no other local districts currently implementing similar AI-powered security systems.
The district is currently in the pilot stage of implementation, carefully testing and refining the system before full deployment. Plans call for a comprehensive announcement to all district stakeholders this summer, ensuring transparency and community awareness about the new security measures.
