Stone Oak Elementary School teacher, Rosa Carillo, was surprised with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a $2,000 check from our partner, Credit Human.
SAN ANTONIO — Fifth graders at Stone Oak Elementary School thought they were going to an assembly about discipline.
Instead, KENS 5’s Audrey Castoreno showed up to honor a North East ISD teacher with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a check from our friends at Credit Human.
It took a while for the shock to wear off for fifth grade dual language science teacher, Rosa Carillo, who learned she was the NEISD EXCEL award winner.
This educator, who has been teaching for 25 years, is known for being a hands on teacher.
Her science labs are known to be engaging and fun. A word many of her students use to describe her.
“It’s like really fun trying to do all that and then drawing you on your notebook,” student Regina Cabeza said.
Anders Vasconllos also feeling the excitement for his favorite teacher adding, “She deserves [it]. I was like, wow. That’s really cool for her. She’s so special.”
Mrs. Carillo, has taught summer school and after-school English classes to immigrant children.
This dual language teacher believes knowing two languages can be both a bridge and a barrier.
But her goal, she tells us, is to give every child the opportunity to learn, regardless of their background.
“Learning is not easy. Learning is not supposed to be easy. But with that, you need to take the risks. You need to make the mistakes. That’s where the amazing stuff happens,” Carillo said.
We asked Mrs. Carillo what she will do with her $2,000 gift from Credit Human. She said the holidays are around the corner, so she will probably be spending it on her family.
