Roscoe man recovers after bee swarm attack while mowing lawn

A Roscoe man is recovering after a swarm of honey bees attacked him in his yard Saturday morning, prompting a swift response from emergency crews.

According to the Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department, the incident occurred in the 2800 block of County Road 101. The elderly man was mowing his lawn when he unknowingly disturbed a swarm of bees living in a cistern on his property.

“You never know when you’re going to come across a problem… until you’re already on the problem,” said Fire Chief Valerie Pruitt, who responded to the scene.

Chief Pruitt said the noise from the lawnmower likely triggered the bees, causing them to swarm and sting the man repeatedly. Despite the attack, he managed to make it inside his home and call for help.

Emergency responders transported the man to a local hospital, where he was treated and later released.

Firefighters also coordinated with a local beekeeper to safely remove the bees from the property to prevent future incidents. Chief Pruitt emphasized the importance of staying alert when working outdoors, especially during warmer months when bee activity increases.

“Just be aware of your surroundings,” she said. “If you see bees or wasps flying, stop and take a look around. If you notice a large number, back away and try not to disturb them.”

The fire department extended its gratitude to local beekeeper Russell High, who donated a bee suit to the department to better prepare them for future emergencies involving stinging insects.

Authorities are encouraging residents to report large swarms and to avoid disturbing hives whenever possible.
