Russell Keller wins KENS 5 EXCEL Award for Lackland ISD

Russell Keller of Lackland ISD was surprised with the KENS 5 EXCEL Award and a $2,000 check from Credit Human.

SAN ANTONIO — SAN ANTONIO:  Technology is unavoidable these days, and one local teacher is making sure students are prepared for what comes next.

Russell Keller, a computer science teacher at Virginia Allred Stacey Jr./Sr. High School in Lackland ISD, is this week’s KENS 5 Excel Award winner.

With the help of KENS 5 partner, Credit Human, Keller was surprised in his classroom with a $2,000 check in recognition of his excellence in education.

Keller has taught at the campus for 16 years, focusing on computer science and teaching students how to code and create apps. But students and staff say his dedication goes well beyond technology.

From the first bell to well after the end of the school day, Keller spends his time coaching Academic UIL, leading the school’s CyberPatriots team, and advising the yearbook staff.

“I get students to amaze themselves that they accomplish something,” EXCEL Award winner, Russell Keller said. “That’s a good feeling, and that’s inspiring—more than some of the other jobs that I had before I went into education.”

Students say Keller’s commitment and welcoming nature make a difference, especially at a military school where students frequently move in and out.

“He can tell when some of us are having off days, and he doesn’t make us feel bad about it,” said Audrey Upton, a senior at the school. “He tries to uplift us and make everybody feel welcome. We love him so much, and we really appreciate all he does.”

In addition to the recognition, Keller received a $2,000 award from Credit Human for his dedication in the classroom.

Keller said he plans to use the award to take his wife on a cruise.
