SA homeowner shot after exchange of gunfire with car thieves on far west side, police say

SAN ANTONIO — A homeowner was shot in the back after an exchange of gunfire between the man and some car thieves on the far west side Monday morning, police said.

The shooting was reported just after 9:15 a.m. in the 2100 block of Farmsville Drive, in a neighborhood off of South Ellison Drive.

Police say the victim and his father confronted two suspects who were trying to steal a neighbor’s car across the street. The suspects pulled guns out and the victim and his father pulled out their own handguns. Police say they exchanged gunfire and the man was shot in the back.

Officers arrived first to the scene and helped the victim by covering the gunshot wound with a seal. Soon after, EMS arrived and took over but it was likely due to an officer’s actions that saved the victim from bleeding out. He was taken to the hospital in stable, but life-threatening condition.

Nina McCauley, whose car the thieves were trying to steal, says her neighbor is a good man.

“I hope he’s OK,” McCauley said. “I’ve been praying that he’s ok. The car’s not worth it. Take the car! You can always get another one. You can’t get another life.”

Police say there were at least two suspects involved in the shooting, with possibly more who were waiting in a getaway vehicle. No arrests have been made yet.
