SA mother concerned over open campus during lunch at Stevens HS after student is stabbed off campus

Police say a fight with a group of students in a field near the campus escalated to one student being stabbed and another cut.

SAN ANTONIO — Police say a 15-year-old student from Stevens High School was stabbed Monday afternoon and another was also hurt.

According to San Antonio Police, this all happened in a field next to the campus.

A parent we spoke with says she’s not surprised a student from Stevens was stabbed and says fights during lunch time are an ongoing problem.

“This is not the first time they come here. The kids come (to) fight. It’s always. Every day,” said Cynthia Zarate, whose son attends Stevens.

Zarate says something needs to be done about fights taking place during lunch time.

At around 12:30 p.m. police said officers responded to a field near the campus where they found the 15-year-old student had been stabbed.

Police say a group of Stevens High School students got into a fight when one of the students pulled out a knife, stabbing one.

“I miss the days when a fight meant knuckles. When a fight meant go out behind a building and fight it out,” said Lou Skidd, who lives near the school.

School officials say the school was placed on lockdown while police investigated the incident.

The student who was stabbed was taken to University Hospital. School officials say he suffered non-life threatening injuries. The other student was treated by the school nurse.

KENS 5 confirmed with Northside ISD that Stevens does have an open campus policy during lunch but the district could not confirm if the students involved in today’s fight were on their lunch break.

NISD did explain how the open campus policy works.

“Stevens is an open campus during lunch for eligible students (must be junior or senior, must have parent permission, must meet criteria with grades/attendance, etc.) I do not know if the students involved today were off during lunch,” said Barry Perez, NISD assistant superintendent for communications and spokesman.

Some expressed concern over that policy.

“Who’s watching them? Who knows where they’re going? Who knows what they’re doing? Nobody,” said Richard Skidd.

School officials did also say all high schools have at least two police officers assigned to the campus.

Zarate says she is also for closing the campus during lunch and says she’s brought the issue of student fights during lunch time to the district.

“We need to do something for the kids. I report (it) and they say the vice principal and the principal, they say ‘We can’t do anything,'” said Zarate.

We do know one person was detained but it’s not clear if they are facing any charges.
