SAFD: 2 people hospitalized with serious burns after house fire on northwest side

According to fire officials, a man and a woman both suffered burns covering 20 to 30% of their bodies.

SAN ANTONIO — Two people were hospitalized with serious burns after a fire broke out at a home on the city’s northwest side on Friday morning, according to the San Antonio Fire Department.

SAFD said firefighters responded to reports of a structure fire at a home in the 300 block of Viendo around 5:42 a.m.

According to fire officials, a man and a woman, both over 40-years-old, suffered burns covering 20 to 30% of their bodies. A third family member, who was not home at the time, was medically evaluated when firefighters arrived.

All three members of the family survived.

Fire officials believe the blaze may have sparked when one of the residents lit a cigarette while the oven was on, causing a flash that quickly ignited the home. SAFD said the back of the house was heavily burned and the rest of the home sustained significant smoke damage, leaving it unlivable.

A nearby power line caught fire and CPS Energy crews were called to cut power to the home as a precaution, according to fire officials.

Firefighters also worked to protect a vacant two-story home located behind the property. That home was not damaged.

SAFD said the fire was brought under control within roughly 15 minutes of arrival.
