SAFD: Apartment building deemed total loss after ‘catastrophic’ roof collapse

Fire officials were called to northwest side for the fire just before 3 p.m. Friday. One person was treated for minor injuries, but several families were displaced.

SAN ANTONIO — An apartment building on the northwest side was deemed a total loss Friday afternoon, and several families were received accommodations to be relocated elsewhere after flames crept through their units.

The San Antonio Fire Department responded just before 3 p.m. to the Avistar on the Boulevard complex in the area of Huebner and Fredericksburg, where officials said a fire on a second-floor balcony spread and turned into a “well-involved large apartment fire.”

SAFD Spokesperson Joe Arrington said crews had to retreat and take defensive measures when the roof began to collapse at one “catastrophic” moment. But everyone was accounted for, officials said, and just one person was being evaluated for possible smoke inhalation.

Nine of the destroyed building’s 16 units were occupied, Arrington said, adding they were fortunate the blaze sparked at a time of day when most residents were at work or school.

The fire was contained to that one building.

KENS 5 cameras at the scene captured damage, including at least one collapsed roof.
