SAFD: At least 4 people injured after jumping from apartment building due to fire that was intentionally started

The fire department reports that at least four people jumped from the building and multiple people were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

SAN ANTONIO — The fire department says at least four people jumped to escape a fire that may have been intentionally set at an apartment building on the northeast side of town Monday night.

Firefighters were called out to the 3900 block of Eisenhauer Road around 10:30 p.m. for reports of a fire.

Officials say that a couple was arguing and the man allegedly assaulted the woman, then locked her inside the unit, started a fire, then ran off. The 34-year-old suspect was found not far from the apartments by police and detained.

The 40-year-old woman jumped from a window to escape from the fire, and another person had to jump from a balcony.

Multiple other patients were found outside the building, according to SAFD. A total of four people were taken to the hospital with burns or fall-related injuries.

A firefighter was also burnt while working on the fire and he was taken to BAMC with minor injuries.

Police say the suspect may be facing arson charges but the investigation is ongoing. The fire was under control within one hour, officials say.

The apartment management will work to relocate the displaced residents. The Red Cross will be contacted if needed.

The building did not sustain any structural damage, however multiple units were impacted. SAFD Arson Division is currently investigating the cause of the fire.

This is a developing story.
