SAFD battled a large fire at a northwest-side apartment complex

Fire crews were called to a reported structure fire at the Park at Callaghan Apartments on Callaghan Rd. just before 9 a.m.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio firefighters battled a large fire at an apartment complex on the northwest side of town Thursday morning.

Fire crews were called to a reported structure fire at the Park at Callaghan Apartments on Callaghan Rd. just before 9 a.m. 

Officials said when firefighters arrived they saw tenants were already evacuating and that a fire was coming from one of the apartment units on the second floor. 

According to officials the firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and learned the fire had spread to nearby apartments and the the connected attic space. 

The initial fire crews called another fire truck to help. Officials said it is standard protocol to alert another fire crew when dealing with a fire at a large apartment complex. 

Additional crews arrived and were able to help knock down the fire. 

Officials say four apartments sustained smoke and fire damage. An additional four apartments sustained water damage for a total of 8 apartments affected. 

The apartment complex is working to get the tenants rehomed, officials said. 

Two tenants were evaluated for minor burns and smoke inhalation. Neither were transported to local hospitals. 

No other injuries were reported. 

Officials praised the tenants for evacuating and for alerting their fellow neighbors. 

According to officials fire crews will remain on scene for a couple of hours to extinguish some hot spots in the attic and conduct an investigation. 

Fire officials do not know what caused the fire.
