SAN ANTONIO — An elderly couple’s home just north of downtown caught fire Wednesday evening, according to authorities.
SAFD was called to the 100 block of University Avenue just after 4 p.m. When they arrived, they found heavy fire coming from the back of the two-story house. The residents were out in front.
The fire was extinguished after it took a while to find the seed of the fire, according to SAFD.
The homeowner said he was inside the house when he heard crackling. He went out to the back and saw the fire through the kitchen.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but the homeowner did say that candles were lit in the back of the house. The fire department says this was “likely” the cause but not confirmed.
The fire department said that the fire caused “extensive damage” to the rear of the house with smoke damage to the entire house. They say that “at least 50% of the house” is a loss.
