SAFD crews perform high water rescue on west side

Officials with SAFD confirmed that rescue boats were placed in the water.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio firefighters performed a high water rescue Wednesday morning on the west side of town.

It happened around 8 a.m. in the 10100 block of West Commerce Street near Pinn Road and Highway 151.

The driver said he was on West Commerce Street just north of Highway 151 when he came upon the water covering the road. There were no barricades on the road.

The driver said he is unfamiliar with the area and thought he saw that a truck in front of him had made it through the water, so he thought he’d be okay to cross.

Officials with SAFD believe that what he actually saw was a truck that had turned around after it approached the water, realizing that it couldn’t make it through safely.

SAFD initially sent boats to recover the man, but decided it was better to extend a ladder to him to rescue him.

The driver was able to get out of his car and climbed onto the platform on the ladder. His car was trashed but he was completely dry.

Officials say it will be hours before his car can be recovered from the water.

This is a developing story.
