SAFD investigating fire on southeast side that severely damaged home

One person got out safely from the fire.

SAN ANTONIO — San Antonio Firefighters say one person escaped without injury as a fire burned through the roof of a home on the southeast side just after midnight Tuesday.

It happened in the 100 block of Mary Helen Drive near South WW White Road, just south of Comanche Park.

It’s one of those traditional neighborhoods where the lots are large and many of the people who live here have been here for a long time.

This call for help sounded about thirty minutes after midnight and as firefighters arrived, they immediately said they had big flames shooting through the roof over the living room and kitchen.

Officials say there was one person inside the home as it was burning but they managed to get out safely. But now they will be looking for shelter elsewhere, as part of the home is heavily damaged.

Fire investigators were called to the scene to look into what caused the fire.

San Antonio is headed into a time of very high heat for a few days, so firefighters and everyone else who has to deal with outdoor work is going to need to be careful and hydrate.

It’s also a good time to check on the vulnerable people in your neighborhood or maybe go to Fire Safe SA to get other ideas on how to be safe in the heat.
