SAFD: Man burned while helping his family escape from house fire

Officials say the family’s dogs also made it out safely after their home on the far west side of town went up in flames.

SAN ANTONIO — A man was burned while helping his family escape from their home after fire broke out Monday night in their home on the far west side of town.

Officials say the family’s dogs also made it out safely after their home on the 2500 block of White Deer Lane caught fire around 9:30 p.m.

Firefighters say his wife and two children escaped as crews battled the flames. The father was taken to University Hospital to be treated for his burns.

Unfortunately, the family won’t be able to return home after all of this.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire coming from inside the home and by the time they got inside, there was debris everywhere. Fire crews say this made it difficult for them to shut off the utilities to the house.

They were able to contain the fire to the property but heat caused a part of the home next door to melt.

For now, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The Red Cross was called out to assist the family since they will now be displaced.

This is a developing story.
