SAFD: More than 100 firefighters battle blaze at apartments on northeast side of town

SAFD is working with apartment management to figure out exactly how many units were impacted and how many families displaced.

SAN ANTONIO — A major fire displaces multiple families on the northeast side late Sunday night.

It happened at the Iron Horse apartments near Loop 410 and Starcrest Drive around 10:30 p.m.

Officials say that everyone was able to get out, but at the peak of this fire around 100 firefighters were responding trying to put out the flames.

The top floor of one of the apartment buildings was completely ablaze.

The San Antonio Fire Department explained because of just how intense and big this fire was, they had to change the way they went about putting this fire out, eventually calling more firefighters to the scene.

“Our initial response is, is larger than normal anyways because the heat index,” said Joe Arrington, SAFD Public Information Officer. “But the second alarm is, is a precaution that we almost always do when we have a working fire in an apartment. And so you would rather have too many resources there and not need them the needle and not have them.”

Crews were able to put the fire out in about 35 minutes.

At this point, fire officials do not know what started this fire.

At last check, SAFD was working with apartment management to figure out exactly how many units were impacted and how many families displaced.

The Red Cross was called out to the scene to help those families.

This is a developing story.
