SAN ANTONIO — Firefighters raced to a west-side home Thursday after flames ripped through the house, officials say.

Crews were called out just after noon to the 8900 block of Levelland, near Potranco Road and Highway 151.

This family is left devastated after a fire tore through their home.

They weren’t home when the fire started — but sadly, they lost one of their dogs. About three other pets are still missing.

According to fire officials, the flames started outside in the backyard of a home on the 8900 block of Levelland Street and quickly spread into the house.

Those fast-moving flames then forced their way into the attic. Firefighters battled the blaze for about 20 minutes before getting it under control.

Fire officials are issuing a warning as families try to keep warm in these colder temperatures.

“Smoke detectors are always our number one suggestion,” Garrett Nikolaus, battalion chief of SAFD, said. “They’re going to help you any time of day or night; they don’t sleep.”

Fire officials said the house has significant damage both outside and inside.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
