SAFD: Two escape house fire with minor injuries on the northeast side

Firefighters contained a house fire on La Pocita Sunday evening, preventing it from spreading further, with two people escaping with minor injuries.

SAN ANTONIO — Two people escaped with minor injuries after a house fire broke out Sunday evening on the the west side, SAFD says.

Firefighters were called around 5:30 p.m. to the 5100 block of La Pocita for reports of a structure fire. When crews arrived, they found heavy flames coming from one home and spreading toward a neighboring house, SAFD spokesperson Joe Arrington said.

Firefighters quickly called for a second alarm to bring in additional crews but were able to contain the fire before it spread further. The neighboring home sustained only minor exterior damage.

Two people inside the home managed to get out before firefighters arrived. Both suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene but did not need to be taken to the hospital.

SAFD said crews made an “aggressive interior attack” to keep the fire from spreading, but the home suffered significant damage. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.

Firefighters spent about 30 minutes getting the fire under control and remained at the scene to monitor hot spots.

While windy conditions have caused concern for fires across the area, Arrington said this particular blaze was not wind-driven.

“There were some windows boarded up when we got here, so it was a complex fire to get in there and knock out,” Arrington said. “But we’re very fortunate we were able to keep it from moving to that neighboring house.”

The street is expected to remain closed for several hours while crews finish their work and investigators comb through the scene.
